Cole has been a great leader since his time in school, and that carried on through his academy days, into his time at MI:5. He'll be the first to complain about the coffee they keep in the office breakroom, but that's generally the least of his worries. He's notorious for sighing about a lot of things that he knows is out of his control, but he rolls with the punches. He works very much by the books and tries to take a neutral stance on everything, within reason. For that, it could be seen as a weakness as he lets some things fly (and more often times, things that don't fly) due to his strong moral standing. He gets his leadership ethics from his dad and brother, both military men.
Cole can be friendly and considers his unit family, even though he tries his hardest to keep work and personal life separate.

Cole was born in New York, but was only there for a year before his parents flew across the pond, and he lived a fairly standard life in England once they were settled there. His entire family has been a part of something government or part of law enforcement, so he already knew exactly what he wanted to be when he grew up. Being led by the examples of his family, he was a pretty straight-edged kid, who used logic and observation to get through the trials of school and even the trouble of the academy that followed. He used his name as reference only, never to get ahead with any agency that he applied to, afraid they'd view it as leverage as opposed to Cole working up the ranks on his own.
During his time with MI:5, he met Veronika. She was an analyst with the investigations division and caught his eye right away. The two of them dated for two years before he proposed. During his time with that division, he was the field agent on task to look into a slew of murders that was claiming victims left and right, suffering the loss of their heart and other vital organs. This earned the serial murderer the moniker of "The Heartbreaker", and Cole worked tirelessly to find clues pertaining to this case. It wasn't until he transferred to the Hounds that he realized the real danger, that the Heartbreaker could possibly be a paranormal entity. Unfortunately, his personal life was affected when the Heartbreaker surfaced after a lull in activity and claimed Veronika as one of his victims.
Cole keeps a lot of his personal affairs to himself, but he's recently lost three people close to him in the span of five years. His half-brother, Donovan, was lost during an military operation overseas. Three years ago, his father passed away of a heart-attack. Veronika was taken a little over a year ago in 2011, and the investigation to find her killer has been on the backburner, as he's been ordered to prioritize more of the urgent matters coming up with MI:5 and the Hounds.
ANYTHING ELSE? Cole lives in a flat by himself. He doesn't go out very much, and they tend to call him "old man" around the office. He has a dog, a black lab he named Locke, after an old partner he had with Metro.
